blogWhile installing a surge protector for one of our customers recently, she asked if we had any recommendations for cutting their family’s monthly electricity bills.  “How much are you paying?” we asked, just to obtain some frame of reference. “Oh, about $350 a month during the summer AC season,” we learned.  And this for an average size, two level home with an older central air conditioning system.

When our customer informed us that a new, high efficiency AC system just wasn’t “in the budget,” we then made several energy saving recommendation, not the least of which was to install two new two-way ceiling fans:  one at the top of the staircase leading to the upstairs bedrooms, the other in their combination kitchen and family room where most of their time together is spent.

During the summer months, the idea is to set the fan so it’s pulling heat up towards the ceiling and keeping it there, thus making it simpler and less costly to keep your livings spaces cool.  During the winter months, well-positioned ceiling fans can help you accomplish the reverse; by pushing the warm air back down, you need less heat from your furnace to stay just as comfortable as you please. The added energy savings will warm your heart, too.
