Creating a special hide-a-way in your home is something everyone is looking for, whether it’s a quiet space in which to read a book and have a cup of tea, or a spot where your siblings won’t bother you while you do your homework and try to outwit the latest video game. Well, you don’t need to add a room to accomplish your primary objective – a little privacy and some elbow room.  Just follow these helpful hints and you’ll have a cozy spot all your own in no time.

Define the space

There are lots of different ways to section off space. You can use space that already is separated, like that area under your stairs. Or you can rearrange furniture to create a cozy spot behind a dresser, bookcase, or sofa. Another way to create a hide-a-way is with fabric. Fabric can be hung from the ceiling, on a structure like a teepee, or with a tension rod between walls.

Lighting

Having a space of your own might come with an absence of lighting.  To compensate for that, try adding string lights, a small lamp, colorful flashlights, a bright nightlight, or a whimsical light projector to help creative the perfect mood for the perfect hideaway.

Seating

Being away from it all doesn’t have to mean abstaining from creature comforts. While sturdy pillows are great for kids, adults need something more substantial to relax on. Maybe you can get by with lawn furniture otherwise lounging in the garage until spring comes calling, or perhaps a trip to the furniture store is in your immediate future.

Neat and tidy

It’s no fun heading to your secret spot if it’s full of books, magazines, Legos, and such.  The easiest way to keep the space tidy is to prevent clutter from forming in the first place. Adding magazine folders, under seating storage, a small garbage can, or a toy bin to the space will help keep it organized and tidy!
