Part of the charm of living in Chicagoland is the number of older homes, especially the well maintained variety.

Charming, that is, for those of us who take time out for the occasional Sunday drive to admire the scenery.  But not nearly as charming when you’re the one stuck with yet another bill you can only chalk up to keeping your home as up to date as possible.

Well, not to be the bearer of glum news, but when was the last time you had a professional electrician inspect your wiring and your fuse box or circuit breaker panel?  Neither type of home electrical service was designed to last forever – far from it.  But it’s not just adequacy (for your family’s current and growing electricity needs) that’s on the inspector’s mind.  It’s safety.  And that’s one thing you don’t want to take any chances with.

So our question to you is this:  is it time for you to think about upgrading or replacing your home electrical service to one that provides more electricity and added safety at the same time?  It might be if any of the following sound familiar:

  • You are acquiring more and more high- end electronic equipment. If you have a fuse box or 100 amp circuit breaker system plus a strong appetite for new and improved electronics, you have your first reason to consider acquiring more electrical power.
  • blogYou can’t run multiple appliances at the same time. If you have to unplug your vacuum cleaner before someone else can use their hair dryer, and so on, you do not have an adequate supply of electricity.
  • Fuses keep blowing or circuit breakers keep tripping. For an electrical service panel, that’s its way of saying “I can generate enough power to do everything you’re asking of me; or at least not do it safely.”  And that’s one warning sign (or one after another for some people) you really ought to be listening to.
  • You’re planning an addition to your home. If you have plans to add or update a significant amount of space, new wiring will be required, including GFCI outlets in bathrooms and other areas where electricity can come in contact with water.  With new wiring comes new power demands, and that’s another very good reason to go forward with an electrical service upgrade.
  • Your electrical service panel is several decades old. The older your system becomes, the greater the potential for internal rust, loose or frayed wiring, water leakage, circuit overloads and electrical fire.
