blogThough your spring cleaning and home maintenance to-do list may be reaching epic proportions, there is one thing you can’t afford to overlook: having your home wiring inspected.  It’s especially important for older homes whose wiring has never been replaced.  The older the wiring, the prone it becomes to fraying and gaps that, in turn, can lead to constant circuit breaker tripping, electrical shock, and even an electrical fire.

When you consider the merits of a whole-house wiring and safety inspection, it makes the same kind of sense as regular car oil changes, annual heating and cooling system preventative maintenance, annual water heater safety inspections, and other home services that help safeguard your family while reducing the potential for costly repairs.

Here’s something else to consider:  each year in the U.S. alone, there are nearly 1.5 million house fires with nearly 19,000 homes destroyed.  And the majority of these start with faulty wiring.

At Excel Electric, these are just some of the steps included in our home wiring and safety inspection:

  • Check for correctly labeled and securely mounted electrical panels.
  • Determine if your home has fuses instead of circuit breakers. If so, we’ll recommend upgrading to a circuit breaker system, one that can fully accommodate the advanced technology available today in home electronics.
  • Confirm that ground fault circuit interrupters (GFCIs) are located in the bathroom, kitchen, garage, and basement and outdoors anywhere water can come in contact with electricity and potentially cause an electrical shock.
  • Ensure there are adequate smoke detectors with a battery back-up installed in all strategic locations, including your garage and stairwells.
  • Confirm that each circuit is properly protected with the right size breaker or fuse.
  • Make sure that the grounding electrode conductor is bonded within 5-feet of the water main.
  • Look for improperly spaced or worn out receptacles.

At Excel Electric, we use the latest and most sophisticated tools to further ensure your greater peace of mind.  For more information or to schedule service – especially if it’s been a year or longer since your last electrical inspection – contact Excel Electric today.
