Is the thrill gone? Do you not give it fresh flowers anymore? Does one room or another need a good paint job, but you just can’t be bothered?

If so, it’s clear you’ve at least partially fallen out of love with your home.

Which means it’s time to reverse course, especially if you have no immediate plans to move. To get started, ask yourself these three questions:

  1. How do you feel when you walk through the front door?
  2. How do you want your home to feel?
  3. What sort of impressions do you want visitors to take with them?

Have your answers? Great, now here’s a head start on how to make it happen.

Relaxed – A relaxed home is one that feels comfortable and inviting. A place where you can snuggle up with your four-legged friend on the couch and put your feet up on the coffee table. Not quite there yet? Then focus on what bothers you the most. No place to put your feet; lack of mood lighting; all TV and no communication; no pillows or area rugs or draperies to inject a feeling of warmth. Take it one step at a time and build on your plan as you go.

Express Your Creativity – Fill your home with things that feed your soul and provide inspiration. Display your favorite artwork, play your favorite music, furnish your family gathering areas with objects that “speak” to you. Turn an old dresser into a one-of-a-kind bathroom vanity, scour flea markets for unique accent pieces, and rethink the way you use your space. Perhaps what you need more than a formal dining room is an art or craft room.

A Peaceful, Easy Feeling  – If it’s a sanctuary you’re after, choose soft neutrals and cool colors, keep clutter to a minimum, focus on furniture pieces that help you stay organized easily, and keep the color palette similar throughout your home, especially in rooms with open sight-lines.

Welcoming – Everyone wants to feel good walking through the front door, including guests. If your home isn’t cutting it, try revamping your entryway with a small table, warm-glow lamp, perhaps even a bench seat. Once past the entryway, place the emphasis on comfortable seating to gather with family and friends.

Embracing – A home should be a place where family members feel safe and loved for who they are. Add a gratitude jar where each family member jots down something they are grateful for once a day or week. Add some inspirational art to one or more rooms, and fill your home with the sights, sounds, and smells that make everyone want to come home.
