Why You Should Inspect Your Electrical Outlets
By: bob
Ah, the humble electrical outlet – a true unsung hero of modern times. Something most homeowners don’t spend a lot of time thinking about – and yet you really should.
According to the National Fire Protection Association, electrical outlets are responsible for more than 2,500 home fires in the U.S. each year. That alone is reason enough to take a few moments every now and then to check for the following conditions, each one a sign of pending trouble.
Crack and Gaps in Wall Plates – Over time, dust and dirt can build up behind wall plates and act as kindling. Make sure that yours are properly sized and replace any that show signs of cracking, gaps, or other damage.
Paint – Avoid painting over electrical outlets, especially the slots. Sure, it takes a few extra minutes to remove the wall plate, but your paint job will look a lot more professional, and you’ll reduce the risk of a fire.
Charring – If you see charring on or around an electrical outlet, don’t use the outlet but do contact a licensed electrician to inspect your wiring system. You could have a short circuit or other issue that is causing overheating that, in turn, could result in a fire.
Heat – Electrical outlets and the wall plates that protect them should never feel warm to the touch. Check each one periodically and, if you notice warm plates or screws, or scorching around the connection slots, do not use that outlet.
Does an outlet and the wall around it feel warm to the touch? This could mean that a fire may already have started behind the wall. Evacuate your home immediately and call 9-1-1 from a safe location.
